Pfc. Thomas Allers remembered for his bravery, service to his country (with video) [Moncler Jacket]

In one final conversation between a young soldier and an old soldier, Pfc. Thomas Allers told his grandfather before he left for the military base in Hawaii that he was afraid.

"I thought about a 1,000 different things you could say,Its simple to show off the uniqueness of your personality by trying something pleasant and striking. Wearing a nicely Women adidas shoes with a reputed brand name printed on it is surely going to compel most of your fellows to adore your sense of fashion and style and all I could think of to say was 'good,'" Sam Pilot, a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant, recalled. "Because if you're not afraid, son, you're either stupid or crazy, and your men will not want to be around you.

"And he went off, and he was brave."

Pilot fought back tears as he spoke at his grandson's memorial service Thursday in front of nearly 250 people at the Plainwell High School auditorium.

Allers, 23, was killed by an improvised explosive device on May 23, a few weeks into his first deployment in Afghanistan.

Allers, an only child, lived in Plainwell since he was in third grade and graduated from Plainwell High School in 2006.

Allers belonged to a family where several people, including his two grandfathers, served in the military, Pilot said.

"All of Tommy's family and friends mourn his passing. Some family members feel the pain in a somewhat different way," Pilot said. "For the pain is tempered with a sense of pride and honor. He volunteered and went where he was asked to go in spite of the danger."

The service included a mix of formal military pagentry and more casual elements that reflected Allers' personality, such as the playing of one of his favorite hard rock songs.

Yves Fontaine honored Allers by giving the soldier's posthumous awards to his Allers' parents. They included the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

Also during the service, the song "Diamond Eyes" by the band Shinedown was played.
