Sherlock The Shoe Doc

When I was in Detroit over Easter weekend, one of the most fascinating people I met there was a shoe doctor in the Compuware building at One Campus Martius.

“Shoe Doctor?” — you might be wondering. He’s a guy who shines shoes, but I didn’t think that was the right title since he does far more than shine shoes, which is a dying art these days. He showed me some shoes he repaired, and he made them look brand new.

No wonder he’s called the Shoe Doctor. It’s even right there on his business cards, along with the byline: I’ll make your shoes ‘BLING BLING’! And man, did he ever! Taking his time — because all good jobs take time — he used leather conditioners, waxed, buffed and polished, then kept going, layer after layer until I could practically see my own reflection! Then he dripped water on them to show me how well they were polished.

But you know what? My main purpose to see the Shoe Doctor wasn’t actually to get my shoes shined. I bought these Fluevog boots in 2006 (a whole other story), and they were in need of some attention, and a buffer against water, but my real motivation was to talk to the Shoe Doctor. You see, I’d just arrived in Detroit late the night before, my hosts had left the house before I did, and I was in the Compuware building to get maps and use the washroom while it was raining a bit before setting out to photograph the city. When I spotted the Shoe Doc and his friend (whose name escapes me now, but I do remember he’s 79 years old), I just knew I had to talk to them.
